Intended Use

For the quantitative in vitro determination of iron in serum and plasma. This product is suitable for use on the Hitachi 704, 717, 902, 911 and 912 analyzers.

Clinical Significance

The concentration of serum iron reflects principally the concentration of ferric iron bound to serum transferrin, a protein responsible for transporting iron from the intestine to the cells were it is needed.

Iron deficiency is one of the most prevalent human disorders. In adults iron deficiency is often symptomatic of chronic blood loss. Iron measurements are particularly beneficial when determining if anemia is due to iron deficiency or long term illness. Serum iron concentrations also appear to be decreased in acute or chronic inflammatory disorders such as acute infection, immunization or myocardial infarction.

Elevated levels of serum iron are present in hemochromatosis a genetic condition where too much iron is present in the body. Higher than normal levels of iron are also known to occur as a result of blood transfusion, hepatic disease, renal disease and lead poisoning.


Ferric iron is dissociated from its carrier protein, transferrin, in an acid medium and simultaneously reduced to the ferrous form. The ferrous iron is then complexed with the chromogen, a sensitive iron indicator, to produce a colored chromophore which absorbs at 570 nm.
