Intended Use

For the quantitative in vitro determination of Apolipoprotein A-II (Apo A-II) in serum and plasma. For use as an aid in assessing the risk of cardiovascular disease. This product is suitable for use on the RX series instruments which includes the RX daytona and RX imola.

Clinical Significance

Lipoproteins are large complexes of molecules that transport lipids (primarily triglycerides and cholesterols) through the blood. Apolipoproteins are proteins on the surface of the lipoprotein complex that bind to specific enzymes or transport proteins on the cell membranes. This directs the lipoprotein to the proper site of metabolism.

Apolipoprotein A-II is a major constituent of High Density Lipoprotein (HDL) particles and plays a an important role in the reverse cholesterol transport and lipid metabolism. The distribution of Apo A-I- in the HDL is primarily determined by the production rate of Apo A-II. Increased production of Apo A-II promotes atherosclerosis by decreasing the proportion of anti-atherogenic HDL containing Apo A-I.

Apo A-II is synthesised mainly in the liver and modulates lipoprotein lipase and hepatic triglyceride lipase. It also acts as a co-factor for Lecithin cholesterol acyltransferase which is involved in lipoprotein processing


This method is based on the reaction of a sample containing human Apo A-II and specific antiserum to form an insoluble complex which can be measured turbidimetrically at 600 nm.
